Last meeting
–
Wednesday January 18, 2006
Speaker: Edward
A. Laws, Dean of the Department of Oceanography & Coastal Science at LSU.
He spoke on Aquatic Pollution and the effects of Hurricane Katrina
on the
New
Orleans
area. He showed us the
impact of the “loop current” in the
Gulf of Mexico
as it relates to hurricane development.
We also saw video of the canal breaches in
New Orleans
. He
also showed us charts detailing Microbes and HAB’s.
We also looked at the pumping stations throughout
New Orleans
. Finally, we were shown the sampling
results of e-coli and other bacteria. Dean
Laws did a wonderful job of translating technical data to a form that we all
could grasp. Questions and answers
were several. Of note,
Baton Rouge
water is a good bet because if is from
a well and not surface; less opportunity for the “bad stuff” to occur.
Overall, a great presentation; enlightened all in attendance.
