Jerry Boyce introduced our speaker, Ms. Kara Still from the Heart Association. She described the work of the Association and the success it has had in reducing the deaths from heart problems. It was started more than 75 years ago by six doctors in New York. It is dedicated to raising money to help in research.
Emphasis is placed first on prevention involving diet and exercise. High blood pressure needs to be managed as well as diet.
Next is the need for quick action when an attack occurs. CPR is needed immediately. With immediate CPR the survival rate jumps from 5% to 20%. After that the patient gets advanced care.
She displayed a portable AED machine (Automatic External Defibrillator.) The machine gives oral instructions as you use it. Every fire truck in Baton Rouge carries one. The best immediate attention is available at airports.
Stroke victims need medical attention within two to three hours after an attack.
She showed a video of the work of the American Heart Association. Their goal is to reduce deaths by 25% by year 2010. Many seminars and other programs are scheduled. We are all invited to attend the Heart Walk on Saturday, March 22, 2003 at 9:00 A.M. on the steps of the State Capital. For participation by your company call her at 248-7711.
President Moscona announced that our club meeting will be at Our Lady of the Lake hospital on February 19 because of the full booking by the hotel and also at another location on March 19. More details later.
Next week the program will be about professional basketball. Speaker will be George Parjis of the New Orleans Hornets.
