April 16, 2003

The club met for its regular meeting at the Marriott Hotel on April 16, 2003, with Jodi Moscona presiding. Dale Hodges led the song, Wilson Baldridge led the pledge, and Joe Culotta led the prayer.

Mark Dean was the guest of Jodi Moscona.

Bob Schmidt thanked members, nine, who came out and cleaned up Perkins Road last Saturday. A call went out for members to attend the LSU Circle K Banquet at the Rural Life Museum as an Interclub at the installation banquet on April 26. Call Jodi if you can make it.

Rick Martin reported on his attendance at the Key Club Convention where Catholic High and University High were cited and received many awards. The new Governor of LaMissTenn Key Club is from Catholic High, and U-High received first place in the single service awards for their project with Cancer Services (Luau and Sock Hop).

President Jodi opened the meeting for nominations from the floor for next year's officers. Hearing none he declared the reported nominees elected by acclamation. New officers are: Brandt Edwards, President; Brett Mason, Vice President; Chad Olivier, Secretary; Rick Martin, Treasurer; and New Board Members Jeffrey Koonce, David Cresson, Steve Brown, and Jerry Boyce.

Terry Bell introduced our speaker, Anthony Marino, Director of Aviation at The Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport. He has served since 1995, is on the Governor's Advisory Board, and has served as President of the Louisiana Airport Managers Association.

He pointed out that the airport receives no public funds from the City-Parish but operates as an Enterprise fund using its own self-generated revenues. It costs some $30,000 per day to operate the airport. New construction to improve service for the public has just been completed at a cost of about $151 million dollars. Most of the airlines get a high yield operating out of Baton Rouge. Airlines get incentive to come to cities - usually around one million dollars. The cities are throwing money at the airlines. A new training facility for maintenance personnel is soon to open at Baton Rouge. Delta Airlines will do a lot of maintenance here. A new air cargo operator will open here. They are working on a master plan covering the next twenty years. Mr. Marino does not favor the new large airport planned between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. He says there are adequate existing facilities already paid for by the public.

Jackpot names included Dale Hodges and Chad Olivier and Bill Stracener who does not play.

Next week we will hear from Clayton Wilcox, Baton Rouge School Superintendent. Then the next week will be on physical therapy by Gloria Wall of Capital City Physical Therapy organization.
