Our guests were Neda Tawfik, a graduating U-High Key Clubber, her mother, and Max Constantin Jr.

The club presented Neda with a CCK scholarship for her achievements at U-High. She had over a 4.0 GPA and over 150 service hours this year. She will attend school at New York University .

David Cresson announced the golf tournament will be held October 29 this year.

Guest Speaker: Jan Eisenberg, Glory House Ministries Executive Director

Jan explained that Glory House exists to help people overcome drug, alcohol, and substance abuse problems. It is a prison ministry. It began by assisting those coming out of prison and is fully approved by the court system. 95% of the attendees are referred by the courts in lieu of jail time.

They are a Christian organization that believes people can be changed by helping them admit they have dependency problems, then overcome them. Jan believes that if they could minister to these people earlier in their lives they could avoid the problems occurring. Many are simply doing what they know and what their parents did, a sort of generational curse, and 70% of all crimes involve drugs and alcohol.

Jan also said they need volunteers to be trained and help minister. They also need a digital projector and monetary gifts are always welcome.

End of the Year Banquet

The event will be held at Ashley Manor this year on Friday, August 20th. In order to make sure we have enough food, we need to get a head count of the number of people planning to show up.  We could easily have 40 people.  Please RSVP to Brandt Edwards at brandt@twru.com  or (h)273-7498, (w)926-1050

From a member

Robert Hodges and Angeles send deepest thanks to their friends of the Capital City Kiwanis Club for the support they received in their annual fund-raising for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

They also want to share the following good news item from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation:

CF Headlines     May   2004

We are happy to report that SmartMoney magazine, published by the Wall Street Journal, named CF Foundation as the #1 health research non-profit in the country.  The CF Foundation was followed by Juvenile Diabetes Foundation at #2 and American Lung Association at #3.  Thank you all for your efforts in making this possible!

CF research advances often occur at a brisk pace.  This has been especially true over the past few weeks.  The money raised at events such as GREAT STRIDES help to keep this momentum going strong.  But the CF Foundation now faces a unique situation.

For the first time in its history, the pace of CF drug discovery and research is outpacing our ability to fund all opportunities presented.

Hot Air Balloon Festival

We will be working in two tents at the Festival this year, and the club is guaranteed $2,500 for helping. Contact Jerry Boyce for questions. The shifts are:

Friday, Aug. 6      4-7, 7-10

Saturday, Aug. 7   3-5:30, 5:30 -8,

                              8-10:30

Sunday, Aug. 8     3-6

Dues Restructuring

1) Attention all members, the club will vote on a new dues structure during the regularly scheduled weekly meeting on August 18, 2004 .  The vote will be by written ballot.  You must be present to vote, no proxy voting.  An approval of 2/3rds of the members in attendance will be required for the change to take effect.  Fifteen minutes of actual discussion will be allowed before the vote so that members can make comments.  The results will be given by the end of the meeting.

2) The Board of Directors has made a motion to increase senior member dues to $160 per quarter.  This will eliminate any dues differential between regular and senior members.  Senior members will be entitled to all meals provided during the quarter.   Seniors can, upon certification of financial need, be considered for financial assistance.  Any senior approved for financial assistance will only be responsible for International and District Dues as well as meals for any meetings actually attended.

3) The same financial assistance will also be available, upon certification of financial need, to any member under the age of 25, provided the member was a former member of a Kiwanis International sponsored program.
