The song was led by Bill Stracener, Dee Cothern said the pledge, and Charles Rea prayed for the club's continued success. At the head table sat Jodi Moscona, outgoing president, Brandt Edwards, incoming president alongside his wife. And last but not least, guest speaker District Attorney Doug Moreau.
Fellow Kiwanian Morris Brown pinned all the new officers and Jodi received his past president's pin. Jodi also awarded Jerry Boyce the 2002-2003 Capital City Kiwanis Kiwanian of the year trophy, which was above and beyond anything this bulletin writer expected and for that matter, deserved. Nonetheless, it was a great honor.
Announcements were made by Joe Culotta to work the LSU book bazaar at the LSU Ag. Center mini barn on Oct. 2 from 5-7 p.m. Sadly also it was reported that Ed Calamari's wife passed away this past Sunday, Sept. 21st.
Nataly Ortiz collected the jackpot, which was given to our favorite Marriott waiter, Joseph. David Cooley brought a couple of guests: Mr.'s Poche and old what's his name.
Jeff Koonce introduced Doug Moreau as a former NFL and LSU great star. Mr. Moreau humbly stated that a new definition of star player was coined by Jeff because Doug certainly saw himself not as a star, but rather, a run of the mill football player. Mr. Moreau went on to describe a couple of John Wooden stories of humility, most notably the story of Coach Wooden speaking in the town of Elkhart, Indiana in which the high school's billboard stated "Our Speaker tonight: John Wooden, whom we are stuck with because our more notable speaker fell through."
Mr. Moreau compared and contrasted coach Nick Saban with Coach Wooden in some regards. However, he indicated that Saban would probably never match the 10 NCAA national championships in 12 years that Coach Wooden accomplished. Mr. Moreau also discussed the serial killer trial at length, particularly in terms of the defense's spending habits on the case.
Mr. Moreau also stated he felt Georgia might win the rest of their football games this season. Mr. Moreau also discussed coach Saban's moniker as the Blitz King of SEC football.
Finally, Judge Doherty described Mr. Moreau as a great District attorney which all of Baton Rouge could be proud of.
Next week's meeting will be held at the Great Wall on College drive and the Speaker will be Attorney General candidate: Susie Terrell.
