Jerry Boyce introduced our speaker, David Pariser, who is a licensed physical therapist, practices in a clinic in New Orleans and is on the faculty at LSUNO. He said that Louisiana is one of only 15 states who do not allow direct access to physical therapist clinics. The other 35 states do allow it. Louisiana requires a referral from a physician. If patients could get direct access, they would save the cost of the physician. Most treatment is for neck and back pain. Patients could get back to work sooner. His Association is working with the legislature to change the law and he asked members to use any influence they may have to help get the changes made. Direct access is opposed by doctors and chiropractors and others. Direct access is safe. Education requirements are at the Masters level but they are working to get it to the Doctor level. They treat the causes of problems, not just the symptoms.
Upcoming speakers:
Dec. 11 - Ginger Miller - B.R. Regional Eye Bank
Dec. 18 - Stacy Barbier - American Heart Association.
Jan. 8 - Dr. Valerie Burton - OLOL Child Assessment Center
Jan. 15 - Beverly Major - LSU Career Services
Losers in the jackpot were Dick Roberts and Charles Rea. Pat Brown was the winner but he was not present so the pot rolls over.
